Year 1 - St Francis

Welcome to Year 1!

St Francis

Hello and welcome to Year 1!

In Year 1, we aim to enable all children to be independent, creative and confident learners. We do this through fostering a welcoming, safe and secure learning environment that is rooted in encouragement and praise.

To enable all children to progress and develop, we learn in lots of different ways:

  1. Through whole-class shared learning.

  2. Through independent learning.
  3. Through adult-led focus groups.

  4. Through continuous provision – whereby the children are able to access our ‘COOL’ Room where we Choose Our Own Learning.

In our ‘COOL’ Room we provide many hands on activities for the children. This is to consolidate previous learning, develop language and social skills, and to encourage independence, confidence and creativity when approaching the challenges set.

Each week, new and exciting activities and tasks are provided for the children to engage in that link to our current learning and topics.

Throughout the year, we also cover all the Year 1 objectives for English, Maths, R.E., Science, P.E., History, Geography, Computing, Music, Art and Design. Please see our curriculum overview below.

Through our ‘Floppy’s Phonics’ programme, we continue to build on the phonic knowledge the children have gained in Reception. This enables us to support all children in becoming more confident and fluent readers and writers. All children in Year 1 read regularly and reading books are changed throughout the week.

Each half term you will receive a class newsletter with important information and key dates for the coming term.

We very much look forward to sharing the children’s learning and achievements with you through our Class’ Dojo page and our door is always open if you have any questions.
